Denatured Alcohol

Denatured alcohol is a solvent used with alcohol-based products, such as shellac.  This product is purely a solvent, without additives.

Denatured Alcohol

This is a handy solvent.  We put it in small containers that go on every job.   Here are some uses of denatured alcohol.

  • Cleans off dry acrylic paint/glaze
  • A good cleaner for dirty surfaces (as long as a quick application)
  • Because alcohol is an emulsion, it thins water-based varnishes and latex paints better than water. You’ll end up using ¼ of the amount of water.  (don’t thin more than 10%)

  1. Does anyone know what exactly is “Denatured alcohol ” herein Europe ?
I have tried isopropyl alcohol and pure pharmacy alcohol ( 96% ) but does not seem to work on a glaze, except IF there is much water on it but then it becomes messy.
    Any clues please ?

    Thanks. Alex.
